The Category within Wikipedia listing at the time of sampling 76 entries. Inevitably, a partial and eclectic list - but interesting and useful, none the less ..

'One of the problems of the Internet is that the information on it is not too well ordered. This of course also counts for information about Classical Composers. This is an attempt to do something about that.

'It is my goal to make this a starting place for looking for information on any classical composer, long dead or still living, famous or not at all (yet) so famous. It is not my intention to store all information at this site, but just to provide some basic data, and then link to as many pages at different sites as possible (which will probably be difficult for the less famous composers, but who knows...). I might start my own pages about some of my favourite composers; you will notice soon enough.'.

Rewarding Site covering 3809 composers (6 April 2009) with much other useful information - including, most recently, the start of a 'Music Atlas'.

'The second edition of this book now contains over 10,000 composers and 74,000 entries, making it the most comprehensive list of organ music ever published. Each composer is listed with ‘life-dates’ and their main countries of residence; alternate spellings of names which are cross referenced in their related positions are given, together with the portion of the name usually used highlighted. The list of compositions for each composer includes publisher, date of publication and composition, opus number, and the movements of large multi-movement works. Note that owing to varied information sometimes available, not all of the above is necessary on each work. Other information included is an appendix of publishers including their web-address where known; also a list of compositions and composers per country, and a list of the most prolific composers.'

'This service consists most basically of five compilations of material: (1) a master, alphabetically-arranged, "Composers" list (containing basic data, major works, and influences) of 444 individuals; (2) a "Basic Library" list of works culled from this master list (and re-arranged by musical genre); (3) a "Geographical Roster" in which the names of the 444 composers are listed under the names of the countries with which they were (/are) associated; (4) an alphabetically-arranged "Index of Forms and Styles" listing the names of composers associated with each subject entry; and (5) a "Glossary," which defines terms used here. Each of these lists is scrollable and accessible from the same window; to switch entirely from one list to another to begin a different kind of browsing one need only click on one of the right-side links provided.'

A very good informative Site to browse around ...

Relatively wide coverage, giving birth/death dates for all the entries, with biographical information for a proportion.

Companion website describing and updating the seminal text of Dr John Henderson, now in its 3rd edition (2005). The printed volume's 986 pages include details of: 17112 composers from 106 countries with full worklists of music for solo and organ with instruments (or orchestra); 872 women composers; full dates/places of birth/death; revised biographies; listing of unpublished works; chronological list of Parisian titulaires; over 1600 publishers of organ music; analysis of the history and content of UK organ recitals 1880-1930.

The website provides a good range of background information and includes some additions and corrections to the printed tome. There is also a Composer Portrait Gallery containing over 3150 images/portraits of composers: 'Over the last few years I have randomly collected a large number of composer images from the Internet. In the majority of cases I have no idea where these came from or who (if anybody) holds the copyright and so none are included in the book ...'

'Awarded the C. B. Oldman Prize by the International Association of Music Libraries U.K & Ireland for "an outstanding work of music bibliography, music reference or music librarianship by an author resident in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland".'
